Make a Change in Sierra Leone
Sierra Leone has a sizable population of vulnerable youth and children. Therefore, there is a critical need for volunteers to work alongside these precious children in a number of capacities. Most volunteers at Sierra International Academy will spend their time teaching local students a range of subjects, such as math and reading. In addition to teaching, volunteers will usually be able to plan extracurricular activities for students.
Volunteers ages 18 years and above are welcome to join the program. Sierra International Academy encourages teachers, students, and professionals, old and young. Preference will be given to applicants with some experience in pre-school, primary or secondary education. Individuals with a background in financial management or project development can also apply.
Volunteers will come to know more about Sierra Leone, learn the culture and traditions of the people. They will gain meaningful skills, like communicating with people outside their comfort zone.
Duration: 6 to 12 months period for volunteerism. Accommodations will be provided with host families, meals, and ground transportation are covered by Sierra International Academy. Volunteer should cover airfare, pocket money, and travel insurance.
School to School Support
On November 5th, two-hundred middle school students on Oahu, Hawaii, participated in a Walk-a-thon. This fun event allowed students to raise awareness and money for Sierra International Academy, while promoting wellness and fitness. 7th graders read a historical fictional novel by Linda Sue Park called a Long Walk to Water about a young girl who spent the majority of her day walking to a well to collect water for her family. She was unable to attend school because her family depended on her for survival. This Walk-a-thon was symbolic of the day-to-day struggles that many children around the world must endure to provide basic needs. All donations were contributed to Sierra International Academy to help provide equal access and quality education to orphans from the Ebola outbreak in 2014. Interested in a Walk-A-Thon event at your school or community group, please contact us. We can help you plan and organize a fundraiser for SIA.
